Australia’s billion dollar seafood industry is heading online with a supplier at the Sydney Fish Market taking orders over the web. And with other parties coming aboard, there’s a plan to expand the online fish market concept to other capitals.
The push online is the brainchild of Peter Manettas Seafood, a supplier at the market.
From this week you can go online, place an order, specify how the seafood is presented, and get it the next day rather than drive to Glebe and traipse through market stalls. Mr Manettas says he plans to expand the service to Brisbane and Melbourne early next year.
His grandfather, Peter Manettas sr, was one of the market’s founders, building a successful family empire based on wholesaling seafood while son Nicholas built successful fish and seafood restaurants in and around Sydney, including the Nick’s and Cyren venues.
Mr Manettas says the concept had been more than a year in the making, and was developed with key suppliers including the Sydney Fish Market and other fisheries around Australia.
Mr Manettas says each item from the 150 strong product range will be sourced directly from the Sydney Fish Market morning auction, currently open exclusively to industry, as well as from more than 20 suppliers around Australia and the local fishing community.
Produce such as tropical lobsters are flown in overnight from Queensland; prawns are sourced from Western Australia.
Customers have until midnight to go online and order their seafood and how they want it prepared. Drop offs occur the next day from 9am to 9pm. Customers wanting seafood earlier in the day for dinner events need to specify that. The seafood is delivered by refrigerated trucks.
Mr Manettas says more than 5,000 people have registered for more information and to opt-in to the delivery service which began on Monday. The company received 50-60 order in 6 hours after going live. “Some people have ordered in advance preparing for the weekend,” he says.
The delivery charge is $12.50 for orders under $60, and $9.95 for $60 and above.
Mr Manettas says the seafood industry has been stagnant for many years despite its high value. “We are excited to be pioneering this new frontier in the seafood industry in Australia,” he says. “The prospect of changing the industry and giving people access to this level of product at an affordable price is a first in Australia.”
Sydney Fish Market attracts over 3 million people each year, including a global tourist market.
While orders currently were via the web; the company was looking to build apps down the track. “That’s more of a phase 2 for us,” he says.
“We’re pretty much the first in the industry to try something like this properly,” he says. “People have tried it but they haven’t wholeheartedly thrown everything into it.”
